BA(Hons) Film and Media Queen Margaret University

With my passion for film and cinema, I wanted to work on this on an academic level and so took the undergraduate at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh and in 2019, achieving my BA(Hons) in Film and Media.

Over my four years of university, I was able to focus on many aspects and areas of study within film and media, both focusing on both theoretical studies and practical application. Most importantly, I have been able to study the latest theories and practices, learning and understanding concepts of film and media as they happen which have been very helpful in the roles and projects I’ve been involved with during and beyond my time at QMU.

In my 4th year, my final assessment was a 10,000 word dissertation. For this I wrote an analysis of Neoliberal tropes and ideas within Entrepreneurial Film. ‘The Neoliberal Conductor: Neoliberal Tropes in Entrepreneurial Film’ was a research paper which focused on 15 films with entrepreneur leads from American Psycho (2000) & Schindler’’s List (1993) to Iron Man (2008) and The Incredibles (2004), focusing on key ideas of neoliberalism portrayed within these films.

Of all the models I undertook, I was especially proud of my work done on Film Festivals, a new module offered in my final year which focused on theory and practical planning in relation to film festivals. During this, one of our main assessments was to, within a group, produce a plan for a mock festival event/screening for an existing festival. For this, as someone with previous experience in film festivals and being incredibly familiar with the work of Edinburgh International Film Festival, I was decided to be our group leader and helped guide us in producing a detailed plan and presentation. We decided to go with a screening of Kill Bill: Volume One (2003) under the banner of EIFF Play, a series of events hosted by the festival in previous years providing interesting, interactive experiences surrounding a retrospective film screening. Dividing up tasks to each person’s strengths, with myself taking on main programming and curation along with group leadership, we where able to create a well detailed plan which archived the highest possible grade and great commendation from our lecturers.
